A flour mill and farmland was originally what would later become Springfield in 1847 as more people were brought in by Daingerfield Station operated by Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The station still stands today as the Virginia Railway Express stop near Backlick Road. The settlement around the station would soon gain a post office and in 1946, suburban development was initiated and the population exploded as the nation’s capital sustained a larger metropolitan sprawl. The 1973 unveiling of the mall, today known as Springfield Town Center, transformed the locale into a popular retail destination.
